The Power of Praying Scripture

When a friend introduced me to Joy Lamb's The Sword of the Spirit, The Word of God, he said he believed it to be the second most powerful book he had ever read, second only to the Bible. That certainly got my attention. I wanted that book! As I began to read, the words felt like a giant exclamation mark on a subject God has been patiently teaching me. For some time now, I have been praying Psalm 25:4-5: “Show me your ways Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior and my hope is in you all day long.” My prayer IS being answered. As I learn about praying scripture, God is showing me His ways and teaching me His truths.

I found Joy Lamb's story intriguing: she was volunteering in Christian Healing Ministry's office when she noticed a basket filled with a growing number of prayer requests. Her offer to take these names and pray for them was gratefully accepted. She soon became overwhelmed and took the entire basket to the chapel to ask the Lord how she could possibly pray for so many.  The Lord spoke very clearly to her: “Pray My Word, child.  It brings healing in all areas. Trust Me and pray My Word.”

Together with three friends, Joy categorized the prayer requests and began praying applicable scriptures over the names in each category. The prayers were simple and powerful. Letters were sent to ask that the ministry be notified of any answered prayers. The praise reports flooded in! The Sword of the Spirit, The Word of God was written in response to those who had sent in their prayers, saw them answered, and wanted to bless others the way they had been blessed. The group of three friends grew to 500 in just a few months.

When we pray sacred scripture, we are praying God’s own perfect words. In Isaiah 55:11 the Lord says, “My word that goes forth from My mouth shall not return to Me empty, but shall do what pleases Me, achieving the end for which I sent”.  1 John 5:14 tells us, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us”.  God’s own words ARE in accordance with His will. Your prayers will be heard.

In the Bible there are many verses for physical healing, inner healing, healing of relationships, wisdom, peace, increased faith, increased trust, and, I believe the most important of all: praise!  When you begin to pray your Bible instead of simply reading, God will highlight the scriptures for you. When you speak God’s word out loud, you and God will have come into agreement! What could be a more powerful prayer?

When your prayers are answered, “Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim His greatness.  Let the whole world know what He has done.  Sing to him, yes, sing his praises.  Tell everyone about his miracles.” 1 Chronicles 16:8-9

"May the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace."  Numbers 6:24-26
